SELFIE Movie Review

February 26, 2023

Selfiee has the advantage of not trying to be more than it is. The fact that it isn't even attempting is what's bad about it.

Its larger-than-life hero Akshay Kumar is not really allowed to be overshadowed by an intriguing premise that offers a chance to discuss the transience of fame, what it means in the age of social media, the nature of true stardom, media manipulation, the traps of petty egos, and whether Big Bad Bollywood is really all that big or all that bad.

Even before the film begins, Akshay speaks to the camera in his own voice and dedicates it to his "fans.". Selfiee is depressingly not as kind to its little man as it is to its big guy, despite the fact that fans recently returned the film industry's faith by propelling Pathaan to super-success.

Selfiee, a Malayalam remake of the critically acclaimed and financially successful Driving Licence, centers on superstar Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar) and one of his most devoted fans, Om Prakash Aggarwal (Emraan Hashmi). Vijay is brought to Bhopal for a movie set and then to the RTO because he needs a new driver's license for the film's climactic scene. This brings him to Om, who appears to be the only RTO Inspector in Bhopal.
