Gulmohar (2023) Review

March 5, 2023

Ironically, Gulmohar searches for the answer to this question just as the Batra family prepares to leave their luxurious Delhi bungalow that will soon be demolished to make way for a high-rise. The interpersonal bonds are strained when we first meet the Batra family the night before they must vacate their home. Due to the edging of their separation, they are caught off guard. In addition to fighting for their own identity and space, they are also dealing with ego conflicts. These problems eventually surface, forcing the transitioning family to deal with them.

A situation like that is not brand-new. The appearance of stalwarts like Sharmila Tagore and Manoj Bajpayee, who are cast together in a movie for the first time, gives the story of a dysfunctional family with their secrets a novel touch. Who better than Tagore to play Kusum, who makes her own decisions, doesn't conform to social norms, wants to be free of family obligations, and enjoys a glass of brandy at family gatherings. After a decade away from the big screen, the veteran actor portrays Kusum with grace and experience.
